Who are we?
James Brindley School is a unique school in that it is the only one
in the country to include all hospital teaching units, pupil referral units and home
education throughout the city. So James Brindley at the Children's Hospital is only a part of a very large school.

| When Do We
Teach? |
We teach for
two sessions a day during school term time. |
| These are: |
9:15 a.m. -12:00
noon |
| |
1:15 p.m. -
3:15 p.m. |
| It
would help us considerably if children are ready for school at these
times. |
What do we do?
When a child is admitted to the hospital they will be seen by a teacher
(if they are
well enough). All the wards have a primary teacher, a secondary teacher
and a special
schools assistant or a nursery nurse allocated to them. In addition
we have a range of
specialist teachers for secondary aged children. If a child is fit enough
they may be
taught for the whole day in one of our classrooms. Otherwise they are
taught on the
ward.
What do we teach?
Our aim is continuity of education - often the only normality in what
is an abnormal
environment for the children.
If a child's stay in hospital is brief they will be taught using our
own schemes of work
which are based on the National Curriculum. If their stay is for a number
of weeks or
more, we will contact the child's school and get the appropriate work
from them.
For a planned stay in hospital, we ask parents to bring in school work
so that we can
ensure that the child does not fall too far behind in their education.
Exam time?
We are a registered exam centre for all public exams during Key Stage
4 and also for
SATs at ages 7, 11 and 14, and will liaise with a child's home school
to ensure
everything goes smoothly.
What happens when you go home?
Hopefully, the child will be well enough to return to school when they
leave hospital. If
not, and they are likely to be absent for some time, we can refer them
for Home
Teaching.
